Three Ways to Correct Sun-Damaged Skin

Long, lazy days lounging in the sun once gave you perfectly bronzed skin. Fast forward 20 years later and now you’ve noticed that your care-free days of unprotected time in the sun have taken a toll on your skin across your face, hands, arms and general body. Signs of sun-damaged skin include uneven pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, saggy skin and more. Fortunately, there are a few options available to improve or entirely treat your sun-damaged skin. Keep reading to learn more about a variety of sun damage treatment options available to you.

    Skincare Products

First, it’s important to emphasize that in order to reverse sun-damaged skin, you must protect your skin from further damage. One of the best defenses against sun damage is a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. At Deux Rosé Beauty Refinery, our experienced advanced aestheticians typically recommend sunscreens such as the SunBetter Advanced Mineral Protection, which provides an extraordinary level of protection against UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.

(Alto Advanced Mineral Protection Sunscreen by SunBetter)

After you’ve guaranteed you’re protecting your skin from further damage, let’s discuss products that can begin to repair your skin. Two of our flagship products that work to correct and repair sun damage are  SkinBetter’s Even Tone Correcting Serum and SkinBetter’s Alto Defense Serum.

    SkinBetter Even Tone Correcting Serum:

This correcting serum by SkinBetter improves the appearance of brown patches, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and discoloration. Additionally, this product brightens and evens the appearance of skin, while improving the appearance of yellowing that often accompanies the look of hyperpigmentation.

    SkinBetter Alto Defense Serum:

This product defends your skin against free radicals and the visible effects of skin aging due to environmental stressors, including blue light and pollution. In addition to daily antioxidant protection, Alto Defense Serum improves the appearance of uneven skin tone and redness.

Other benefits of this product include enhancing vitality, improving the appearance of skin tone and luminosity and reducing the appearance of skin redness. This product combines Vitamins C and E plus an additional seventeen antioxidants.

    Laser Treatment

In addition to skincare products, laser treatments have also proven to be effective in combatting sun damage. One of our most popular laser treatments for sun-damaged skin is the IPL treatment.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments, AKA photofacials, uses broadband light to improve the appearance of sun spots, age spots and skin texture. A handheld device channels light energy to target specific parts of your skin. IPL treatments are non-invasive treatments that are both effective and affordable.

    PDO Threads

As we previously mentioned, sun damage can cause sagging skin in various areas of your body. Thankfully, PDO threads are here to help! Smooth PDO threads are ideal for skin rejuvenation. These threads prompt your skin to produce collagen where they’re placed, which can help treat sun-damaged skin. For patients struggling with saggy skin, barbed PDO threads can be used to lift and tighten the skin, reversing and repairing the damage caused by the sun. (A consultation is required prior to all PDO treatments.)

  • How Serious Are You About Your SPF?

How Serious Are You About Your SPF?

The best way to combat premature aging is to take preventative measures. We find that the simplest way to do this is to wear your SPF. Now, you may be rolling your eyes, but wearing daily sunscreen is the most cost-effective way to prevent sun damage, prevent premature wrinkles and most-importantly it helps with preserving your skin’s overall health. Keep in mind, wearing sunscreen is not just for the face, it is also important to cover other areas of the body that are exposed to the sun on a consistent basis like your hands, arms, neck, chest, back of the ears, etc.

If you’re not consistent with your sunscreen, here are some hot takes that you need to know:

    1. Wearing sunscreen should not be reserved for outdoor activities only. Exposure to the sun and free-radicals are experienced on a daily basis. Even blue light from televisions, cell phones and computers cause damage to the skin. Wear it everyday and re-apply accordingly based on the activity!
    2. Wearing an SPF 30 is not enough protection. It just isn’t. Sunscreen is most effective with an SPF 50 and higher.
    3. Mineral sunscreen or “physical sunscreen” is better for you than chemical sunscreen.
    4. If there is an SPF in your makeup or moisturizer – is it not enough protection against sun damage.

If you’re asking yourself where you should start with your sunscreen, we highly recommend the SkinBetter brand. SkinBetter has their line of sunscreen products in their SunBetter suite that include an SPF compact, SPF 56 stick and two cream SPF moisturizers (tinted and non-tinted) that are SPF 75 and SPF 70 respectively.
